Windsor and Eastern Cotswolds

London from £640

Windsor is where successive monarchs from the time of William the Conqueror have remodelled the enormous Windsor Castle, first as a fortress set in a vast hunting forest, later as a grand palace with gardens and the Great Park where today the Queen enjoys riding.  Within the castle precincts, Edward IV built the magnificent St George’s Chapel for the knights of the Order of the Garter whose colourful ceremony is still held here every year.  Further to the west lie the lovely limestone Cotswold hills where the prized ‘Cotswold Lion’ sheep was reared for its superior fleece during the Middle Ages, and where the wealth generated from wool built the many beautiful honey-coloured stone-built Cotswold villages and towns.  We visit the picturesque weavers’ cottages at Bibury, Upper and Lower Slaughter and stop off for tea at Stow-in-the-Wold on the way home.
