Stonehenge and Salisbury

London – from £595

The iconic giant standing stone circle at Stonehenge is the centrepiece of an extensive prehistoric ceremonial landscape.  You’ll hear the latest on exciting recent discoveries.  We take a pretty route down the Woodford Valley to Salisbury, past the site of Norman Salisbury, Old Sarum, abandoned for a site with a plentiful water supply on the river meadows below.  The new Salisbury was planned on a grid pattern of blocks or ‘chequers’.  Its almost uniformly early English gothic cathedral with its tall spire, made famous in Constable’s paintings, dominates the vast open space of the walled cathedral close.  Its treasures include a rare copy of Magna Carta.  We take a short walking tour of the historic city centre, including the market square, medieval inns and wool merchants’ houses, or, if you prefer, see prehistoric finds from around Stonehenge at the local museum.
